It’s Week 6! Here are Friday Night’s Top Ten Games of the Week!
1 – East Marion at Bassfield – Our Perfectly Powerful Peanut Game of the Week. it’s be a crazy start for both teams. Where both teams were supposed to be competing to get to Oxford, East Marion has started an unusual 0-6 while the Killer Bees of Bassfield are a just-as-strange 3-2. No doubt, the Eagles of East Marion need this game much more than the Yellowjackets, but Bassfield has a sense of urgency as well. It’s going to be a high-stakes game this week in Bassfield.
2 – Starkville Vs Callaway – 6A region 2 action begins with JPS Callaway an impressive 4-1 after last week’s win against Provine, while Starkville, with only one game less, is 3-1. The Chargers of Callaway are against one of the toughest defenses in the state, with the Yellowjackets yielding just under 8 points a game. Both teams deserve their good starts and this week puts a true test to their early season records.
3 – Madison Central vs Clinton – There are no weak entries on this list and this is no exception. The Jaguars have a modest 3-2 record this year but are ranked 3rd by Maxpreps. The Arrows of Clinton are ranked 7th with a 2-2 slate. Clinton is putting up the most points, averaging 38 points a game while Madison Central is giving up 21 a game. The numbers slightly favor Clinton but games are not played on paper. This conference game will go a long way to spell which one has the better chance of reaching it to Oxfod.
4 – Lafayette at Charleston – a non-conference game between Charleston (4-1) and Lafayette (4-1), Lafayette pulled a surprise last week in beating Louisville 27-10. Charleston holds a three game win streak coming into the game against the Commodores. Maybe a little over-matched on paper, Charleston can boast a defense that’s yielding a measly 10 points a game while averaging 34. If they can remain tight on defense Charleston could walk away a winner.
5 – Ocean Springs vs Hancock – the Greyhounds are off to one of their fast starts at 3-1 and are ranked 17th in the state by MaxPreps, while Hancock has gotten off to one of their better starts in the last decade. At 3-2, The Hawks are a respectable 5th in a division that has such hitters as St. Martin, a revitalized George County, and are currently ahead of powerhouse D’Iberville. This will be a test; Ocean Springs is rolling, averaging 35 points a game and Hancock is averaging only 20. Push meets shove in this conference matchup.
6 – Lake vs Pisgah – In Sandhill Mississippi the Dragons of Pisgah sport a perfect 5-0 this season, averaging 36 points a game. They run into the equally perfect Lake Hornets, 5-0 and cranking out an even more impressive 38 points a game. This conference matchup may decide the North champion out of there region. This may be the game to go to if your local favorite isn’t playing.
7 – Vicksburg vs Germantown – Few teams have had as much early success in the creation of a young program like Germantown. From nothing 6 years ago to a playoff contender, the Mavericks are currently 2-2 following a loss last week to #3 GOW player Clinton. This week they travel to Vicksburg, where the low-scoring Gators have been yielding a stingy 9 points a game on defense. Expect a hard-fought, low-scoring, well played conference battle.
8 – North Pontotoc vs New Albany – The Bulldogs are off to a respectable 3-2 start this year, and have done it with offense to burn. While giving up 30 points a game, they’ve been tacking them up at a torrid 39 points a game. In New Albany they run into a team with another 3-2 record and yields 30 points a game, but scores an average of 30 points as well. This is a non-conference match, and with championship perhaps not on the line, it’s possible we’ll see more points than usual scored here.
9 – Itawamba AHS vs Kosciusko – The Whippets have gotten off to a good start this year, 3-1 and are third in their division. This week they play Itawamba AHS, 4-0 and one of the highest scoring teams in the state, averaging 40 points a game. They’ll have a good test against Kosciusko, averaging holding teams to 11 points a game.
10 – Corinth vs Kossuth – The Warriors of Corinth are an excellent 4-1, ranked 36th in the state by MaxPreps, and rolling up 36 points a game. They face the Kossuth Aggies with an equally glittering 4-1 and averaging a darn good 33 points a game. As a non-conference match, the coaches may dial back the intensity. Expect to see lots of points on the board this week.
