Strong Second Half Brings Deer Creek the Win

By Noah Crowe, FNUTL

Steele Taylor started the scoring with a 6-yard passing touchdown for one of his three touchdowns through the air, however it was not enough as Deer Creek School (2-6) defeated Humphreys Academy (1-6) on Friday.

The game started with back-to-back scores by Humphreys Academy quarterback Taylor, then a five-yard touchdown run from Deer Creek’s Mason Smith cut the lead to 6 at the end of the quarter with Humphreys Academy ahead 14-8.

The second quarter started off with a video game-like play as quarterback Taylor ran in a 80 yard QB draw for the score as Humphreys took a 28-14 lead at the half over Deer Creek.

The third quarter was all Deer Creek as they stormed back and took their first lead of the night from a 12-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Javion Williams. The third ended with Deer Creek up 38 to 28.

“We played our best game tonight; out of all the games we played this year this was the best we played and the most complete we have played” said Deer Creek Coach Jerry Wayne McClendon on his team’s performance.

Aust Minor Tirey, wide receiver/defensive back, won the MPACT Mississippi award, given to the player who had the biggest impact. He finished with six catches for 112 yards and two touchdowns to go along with his five tackles on defense.

Humphreys Academy Quarterback/linebacker Steele Taylor won the Cricket Wireless Player of the game. He finished 9-14 passing for 135 yards and 3 touchdowns, and had 11 carries for 128 yards with one touchdown.

Humphreys Academy will go on the road next week to Drew as they face North Sunflower Academy and Deer Creek School will be at home as they welcome Delta Academy.
